The high school track and field teams continued their success this past Thursday at the West Holt Invitational. In the team race the boys came home with a runner up finish while the girls were able to claim third place. “I was pleased with the way we performed after the kids had a long lay off from school”, Coach Derry Trampe noted. “It is a little tough to prepare when you are not in your usual routine, and I thought we had some great performances on the day. However, like any other meet, there are some things we could do to be better. We just need to stay focused and work on the little things from now through districts.” The boys scored 68 points to finish as the runner-up team in the meet. Battle Creek ran away with the team title scoring 192 points. Ainsworth finished in third with a total of 62 points. Rounding out the team scoring were: Burwell (57), North Central (54), West Holt (50), Valentine (25), Sandhills-Thedford (11), Stuart (5), and Battle Creek JV (3).
The girls finished the meet with 80 points to claim third place and were just 2 points behind runner-up Valentine (82). Battle Creek also claimed the top spot in the team race with 108 points. Rounding out the team scoring were: Ainsworth (68), West Holt (57), North Central (50), Sandhills/Thedford (44), Stuart (22), and Burwell (16).
Lexi Vancura and Britta Deden were individual champions for the Chants. Vancura won the triple jump with a personal best jump of 35’ 8.5” and Deden won the 300 low hurdles in a season best time of 50.14. In addition to the individual titles the Chants also won the 4 X 100 relay in a season best time. The team of Lexi Vancura, Journi Moran, Kaidence Wilson, and Britta Deden combined to take the title in a time of 52.23. Marin Reilly added a second place finish in the discus with a personal best toss of 106’ 2”. Third place medals were won by Nikie Nelson in the 400 (65.64), Piper Whited in the 1600 (6:12.11 PB), Britta Deden in the 100 HH (16.34 PB), and the 4 X 100 Weight person relay team of Marin Reilly, Juls Gonzales, Bailey Setlik, and Allie Moudry (60.35). Fourth place went to Macy Warner in the 3200 (14:39.84), Marin Reilly in the shot put (35’ 0.5” PB), Lexi Vancura in the long jump (15’ 9.5”), and the 4 X 400 relay team of Nikie Nelson, Kaidence Wilson, Marin Reilly, and Britta Deden (4:30.17 SB). Fifth place awards went to Allie Moudry in the shot put (33’ 10”), Journi Moran in the triple jump (33’ 3.25”), and the 4 X 800 relay team of Maggie Fischer, Macy Warner, Piper Whited, and Claire Cargill (11:08.04 SB). Kaidence Wilson finished 6th in the high jump with a jump of 4’ 8”.
The boys had two gold medal performances on the day with John DeRiso winning the 400 in a time of 52.44 and Calen Pollard winning the 3200 in a time of 10:52.64. In a non-scoring event the weight person relay team of Sam Boettcher, Will Grint, Cainan Rogers, and Jacob Stam finished first in a time of 51.24. Blake Wells finished second in the pole vault with a jump of 12’ 0”. Third place medals were won by Owen Lane in the 400 (54.04), John DeRiso in the 800 (2:07.94), Will Grint in the discus (139’ 3” PB), the 4 X 400 relay team of John DeRiso, Calen Pollard, Jace Geiser, and Owen Lane (3:39.73 SB), and the freshman 4 X 100 relay team of Elliot Baker, Skylar Probst, Madden Beland, and Jed Boettcher (59.61). Fourth place awards went to Owen Lane in the 800 (2:12.44 PB), Will Grint in the shot put (48’ 4”), and Sam Boettcher in the discus (137’ 4”). Jacob Stam finished 5th in the shot put with a toss of 46’ 9” and the 4 X 800 relay team of Garret Severance, Braden Bruha, Grady Moudry, and Elijah Pollard also finished 5th in a season best time of 9:48.10.
The Chanticleer track teams will host the Louplatte Conference meet on Friday, April 29. The meet will begin with field events at 1:00 pm and running events scheduled to start at 3:30 pm.
