The high school track and field teams recorded several solid performances in the Broken Bow Invitational last Friday. In a meet that includes all Class B teams and the Chants, the teams were able to bring home several medals from the meet. “This is always a good test for us when we come to this meet”, Coach Derry Trampe said. “We are the smallest school at the meet and there are several large Class B teams that compete in the meet. I am proud of the way a lot of kids competed on the day. Meets like this help us find out what we need to do to get better.” In the girls meet, the Chants finished 7th in the 11-team field with 36 points. McCook won the meet with 96.5 points while Broken Bow was second with 85 points. Rounding out the team scoring were: Scottsbluff (82), Holdrege (52), Kearney Catholic (52), O’Neill (37), Cozad (32.5), Gothenburg (18), Alliance (17), and Aurora (16).
In the boys’ team race Ord finished 6th in the 11-team field with 40 points. McCook ran away with the team title with 124 points while Aurora and Broken Bow were a distant second with 83 points. Rounding out the team scores were: Scottsbluff (70), Gothenburg (43), O’Neill (33), Cozad (21), Holdrege (14), Alliance (10), and Kearney Catholic (6).
Britta Deden was the highest place winner for the girls as she finished 2nd in the 100-meter high hurdles in a season best time of 16.70. Britta added a third-place finish in the 300-meter low hurdles in a season best time of 50.55. Journi Moran also earned a third-place medal in the triple jump with a season best jump of 33’ 9”. Also earning a third-place finish was the 4 X 800 relay team of Maggie Fischer, Macy Warner, Piper Whited, and Claire Cargill. The team combined to run a season best time of 11:23.75. Fifth place medals were won by Macy Warner in the 3200 (14:38.90), Marin Reilly in the shot put (34’ 6” SB), Jocelyn Hinrichs in the triple jump (32’ 6” PB), and the 4 X 400 relay team of Maggie Fischer, Marin Reilly, Nikie Nelson, and Britta Deden (4:32.83 SB). Sixth place medal winners were Valeria Arellano in the 3200 (15:02.07) and the 4 X 100 relay team of Brookelyn Fox, Journi Moran, Nikie Nelson, and Britta Deden (55.50).
While the boys had no gold medal winners, they did have three runner-up finishes on the day. John DeRiso finished 2nd in the 400 in a time of 53.06, Sam Boettcher placed 2nd in the discus with a season-best toss of 139’ 11”, and the Weightman 4 X 100 relay team of Sam Boettcher, Cainan Rogers, Jacob Stam, and Will Grint finished second in a time of 51.81. John DeRiso added a third place finish in the 800 as he recorded a season-best time of 2:11.19. Will Grint placed 4th in the discus with a toss of 136’ 8”, Blake Wells was 4th in the pole vault (12’ 2”), and the 4 X 400 relay team of John DeRiso, Calen Pollard, Jace Geiser, and Owen Lane ran a season-best time of 3:42.68 to finish 4th. Fifth place medals were won by Calen Pollard in the 3200 in a personal best time of 11:00.96 and Will Grint in the shot put with a personal best toss of 49’ 6”. Sixth place medals were won by the 4 X 100 relay team of Jace Geiser, John DeRiso, Dylan Hurlburt, and Owen Lane with a season-best time of 46.91 and the 4 X 800 relay team of Garret Severance, Maddox Bennett, Braden Bruha, and Elijah Pollard in a time of 9:56.69.
