Quilts

The members of our FCCLA chapter have once again demonstrated the power of teamwork, service, and community spirit by completing a heartfelt project to honor local veterans. This year, students partnered with community members to create and donate 10 handmade lap-sized quilts to be donated during the school’s annual Veteran’s Day Program.

The project began when Barb McKenney, a local quilter and community advocate, reached out for help making quilts to honor veterans. Recognizing the need, FCCLA chapter members, under the guidance of Ms. Hornickel, our Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) teacher, stepped up to meet the challenge.

Starting at the beginning of the school year, students in the FCS Textile Construction class and FCCLA chapter worked together to design, cut, sew, and bind quilts. Donations of fabric and supplies from generous community members allowed students to complete the project while learning valuable skills, such as sewing techniques, teamwork, and time management.

FCCLA members shared progress updates throughout the process, inspiring additional support and excitement from the community. By Veteran’s Day, the students proudly presented 10 completed quilts to veterans during the school’s Veteran’s Day Program. The emotional reactions and heartfelt gratitude from the veterans validated the importance of recognizing those who have served.

“Our students put their hearts into this project,” said Ms. Hornickel. “Not only did they gain practical skills, but they also learned the value of giving back to their community in a meaningful way.”

Although the initial goal was to complete 10 quilts, the students exceeded expectations by finishing 12 quilt tops, with plans to complete 5 additional quilt tops for next year’s Veteran’s Day program too.

The success of this project would not have been possible without the support of our community donors, volunteers, and school staff. A special thank you to Barb McKenney, the Textile Construction class, and Student Council for helping us honor our veterans.

This project exemplifies the FCCLA mission of fostering leadership, service, and collaboration among youth and adults. Our students not only created something special but also left a lasting impact on the community they call home.

Thank you to all who served. We are proud to honor you!
