ORD, Neb. - The Ord High School (OHS) School to Work program, coordinated by OHS Guidance Counselor Lana Kruml and the Valley County Chamber Office, has collaborated with local employers to provide work-based learning for over 16 years.

This program allows students to gain career experience and apply their classroom knowledge and skills, all while earning high school credit.  Students who participate in work-based learning are more engaged in their education, develop skills in communication, problem solving, critical thinking and professionalism as well as technical skills that are crucial to career success.  This is what OHS students have to say about the program:

“I chose to do School to Work at Valley County Health System because I plan to become a dermatologist. The staff has taught me numerous things and has been willing to let me shadow them on their busy days. I have had the chance to experience what it's like to work in a hospital, be around patients, and see the way different doctors work and manage their schedules.” - Maggie, Senior

“School to work has been a great experience and has helped me with my career choice. I am working as a CNA in Burwell at the nursing home. This class has taught me so much. I recommend this class to anyone who isn't sure about what they want to do with their future. It is such a great opportunity and I'm glad we have it because I know I would not be where I am today.” - Maddie, Senior

Employers who provide work-based learning opportunities are able to find and develop talent early, build a pipeline of future workers, tap into new business perspectives and skills from a youth workforce, and build a strong reputation within their communities.

OHS currently has 22 school to work students who complete an interview with the employer before they begin work.  Prior to the beginning of the school year the Ord Chamber of Commerce works with local businesses conducting surveys to identify areas of interest, business needs and ways the community can support the program.  OHS Principal, Aaron Snyder, then conducts the interviews for the students completing their placement at OHS.  "It has been a great experience for our students and for us,” Snyder said.  “We get to build our relationships with the students on a different level.  They are then able to get into the community and get hands-on experience with a career they have interest in.  Some students found they love that career, others have decided to change their career choice.  I am glad we are able to help kids decide what they want to do with their future.”
