Chanticleer Football Wins First Road Matchup

ALBION, NE- The Ord Chanticleer football team went on the road last Friday to face the Boone Central/ Newman Grove Cardinals, a historically strong opponent that the Chants have now beaten in back to back seasons after a 37-20 victory. The Ord defense struggled early allowing the Cardinals to march 80 yards on the opening drive to put the Chants in a 7-0 hole. Ord’s first offensive possession ended with a booming 44-yard field goal (the kick would have been good from 54 yards) from Junior kicker Kelen Meyer. The Chant defense responded with a three-and-out and the momentum shifted from that point forward. Junior running back Tommy Stevens punched in a three-yard touchdown on the ensuing drive and later in the second quarter Junior quarterback Zach Smith scampered 21 yards to the endzone to give the Chants a 17-7 halftime lead. The first scoring drive of the second half for the Chants was one of big gains. It started with a 46-yard pass from Zach Smith to Senior wideout Gage Smith and ended on the next play with Tommy Stevens bursting up the middle for 24 yards and the touchdown to give Ord a 24-7 edge entering the fourth quarter. Both teams scored twice in the final period with Ord’s scores coming on a one-yard run by Stevens and a 31-yard run by Zach Smith. The Chants made their living on the ground in this contest, racking up 352 rushing yards as a team with both Tommy Stevens and Zach Smith rushing for 155 yards individually. This was Stevens second consecutive week with over 150 yards on the ground and Smith averaged a very impressive 10.33 yards-per-carry. This week the Chants will host Pierce with kickoff at 7 P.M.
