Girls Bring Home Two Medals

The high school cross country teams competed in the Louplatte Conference meet last Thursday at Centura Hills Golf course.  The Chanticleer boys brought home the runner-up plaque from the nine team meet. “It felt like a mixed bag of results for us in this meet”, Coach Derry Trampe stated. “I thought we ran well in some places and in other places we seemed a little off. I knew that Doniphan-Trumbull would be the team to beat but I thought we would be a little closer to them than we were.  I thought our girls did well in the race, but we just didn’t have enough to score in the team standings.  We had a good day and I felt good about what we did, I was just hoping we would have a great day.  Now we need to get ourselves both mentally and physically ready to compete in the district meet.”

Doniphan-Trumbull won the boys team title with a low score of 21 points.  The Chants scored 40 points to finish second while Central City was third with 57 points.  Rounding out the team scoring were: Gibbon (59), Wood River (67), St. Paul (88), Centura (128), Arcadia-Loup City (153), and Ravenna did not field enough runners to score as a team.  Ravenna took home the team title in a very close girls’ race.  The Bluejays scored 25 points to win the meet.  Central City was second with 26 points while Doniphan-Trumbull was third with 27 points.  Ord, Gibbon, Wood River, St. Paul, Centura, and Arcadia-Loup City did not field enough runners to score as a team.

The Chanticleer girls brought home two medals from the conference meet.  Avery Bruha finished in sixth place in a time of 23:14 over the 5,000-meter course.  Izzy Jeffres also earned a medal when she finished ninth in a time of 24:13. “I was pleased to see our girls bring home conference medals”, Trampe said. “I thought Avery ran one of her best races of the season and Izzy did well working through her injury to finish the race and get a medal.  They are both competing well at this point in the season.”  Elisabeth Bengston finished 23rd in the race with a time of 32:56. “Elisabeth has improved a lot since the start of the season.  She continues to work hard and give us her best effort”, Coach Trampe said.

The boys brought home three medals from the conference meet this year.  Leading the way for the Chants was Elijah Pollard.  Pollard finished third in the race with a time of 18:03. “Elijah had become very consistent”, Trampe said.  “He competed all the way to the end and was able to hold off a charging runner from Wood River at the end.” Also finishing in the top 10 was Garret Severance.  Severance finished 7th in the field of 48 runners in a time of 18:14. “Garret seemed a little tight during the race and just looked uncomfortable”, Coach Trampe stated. “He didn’t have a bad race, but I think he feels like he could have run better.  We just need to stay positive and run easy this next week at districts.” Grady Moudry was the last Chant to earn a medal. Moudry finished in 13th place in a time of 19:11. “Grady has been a steady performer for us all season and he had a good race again this week”, Trampe said.  Just missing out on the medals were Brodie Klimek (17th in 19:40), Brody Blair (18th in 19:48), and Gavin Whited (20th in 20:10). “Brodie, Brody, and Gavin have been running well and closing the gap on our top three runners these past few weeks”, Trampe noted. “We need to have them close that gap by another 15 to 30 seconds to put us in contention to qualify for the state meet when we compete in districts next week.  The way they are practicing and competing, I am sure they can do this.”

The Chants had two boys compete in the junior varsity portion of the meet.  Skyler Probst and Braden Bruha finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in the race.  Probst finished the course in 20:32 while Bruha finished in 21:19. “Both Skyler and Braden have run well this season especially over the last four weeks”, Trampe commented.  “I am pleased with the progress they have made and with the effort they put in both in practice and in meets.”

The Chanticleers will compete in the C-3 district meet on Thursday, October 12 in Wayne.  The girls are scheduled to run at 3:00 pm with the boys to follow at 3:45 pm.  The race will be held at the Wayne Country Club golf course.
