The Chanticleer golf team competed in two highly competitive meets at quality courses last week and look to prep themselves for a run at a late season peak.
On Tuesday the Chants played in the GICC Invite at Indianhead in Grand Island. They finished 8th of 18 teams against high level competition. Coach Mike Bechtold said he expected all the teams ahead of them to qualify for state and probably be top five in classes B and C.
“Hopefully, we can be on that list as well. All the teams that beat us are very good and should all compete for state titles in their respective classes.”
Bechtold said playing at Indianhead was important for the Chants as the district tournament is also at that course.
“We are a young team and this is the first time several of our kids are seeing these courses. After you have seen a course as a golfer, you can be more confident in your shots because you know where to hit them.”
The Chants also played at Centura Hills in Cairo for the Lou Platte Conference meet. They finished 5th with Caden Lytle medaling 12th and Rowe Lilienthal 14th.
Coach Bechtold said although the results were a bit disappointing, the Chants can appreciate the growth.
“Caden is playing very well and again, seeing these courses for the first time, which makes it impressive that he finishes high.”
“We have potential to put it all together here at the end of the season and possibly meet our goal of qualifying for state.”
The season concludes with ALC Dual on Monday, Fullerton Invite on Tuesday and Districts the following Tuesday.
